   Groot Drakenstein Prison

   Photo opportunity: historically known as Victor Verster Prison, where Nelson Mandela spent the final 14 months of his incarceration. Transferred here in December 1988, Mandela resided in a private house within the prison grounds, a facility often used for lower-risk political prisoners nearing release. It was from this site that Mandela took his first steps to freedom on 11 February 1990, a moment broadcast globally and etched into history
