Overview

This tour involves 4–5 hours of hiking in Hakone (about 8–9 km), so guests need good fitness. You will traverse part of the outer rim of the Hakone caldera, with possible views of Lake Ashi, the Pacific Ocean and Mt Fuji when the weather is clear. After descending toward Sengokuhara, the day finishes with lunch and an onsen. The ascent takes about 90 minutes and gains roughly 500 metres. The ridge walk continues for about 2.5 hours through bamboo grass and seasonal scenery before descending to Togendai. Travel from Hakone-Yumoto to the trailhead is by local bus. The bus fare, lunch and onsen admission are not included in the Viator tour price.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Sengokuhara

    1.5 hours

You will hike up the mountains in the outer rim of Hakone caldera. We will reach the trailhead by taxi and start the hike from around 700metre above sea level. The temperature is generally lower in the mountain this level.

  2. 2

    Mt. Marudake

    2 hours

You will hike along the ridge after you reach the mountaintop. The ridge hike will take around 2.5 - 3 hours or more if you take more photos or snack stops. This is the highlight of this tour because the view is spectacular on the ridge. You could see the Pacific Ocean, Hakone town, Lake Ashi, the volcanic steam of Owakudani, Mt Fuji, and more along the way.

  3. 3

    Lake Ashinoko

    30 min

You will hike down to this area.

  4. 4

    Togendai Station General Information Center

    1 hour

Enjoy local lunch in this area. There are soba, udon, Japanese curry, and Westernised restaurant in this area. I will suggest a good one according to your choice and availability. Food should be a highlight of any trip.

  5. 5

    Togendai Station General Information Center

    1 hour

You will go to an onsen with both indoor and outdoor baths to relieve the tired muscles from the traverse hike. The onsen has a legendary healing effect. This experience can be customised according to your preference.

Meeting and pickup

The guide will be wearing a blue backpack and a white cap with Coconuts Hike Japan logo, waiting for you at the train exit (there is only ticket exit in Hakone Yumoto Station).

End point

After traversing along the ridge, we will reach Togendai and we will enjoy onsen and lunch in that area. You are free to explore the local area after the tour but you can also go with the hiking guide back to Hakone Yumoto Station.
