   Hasedera Temple

   The mountain has been known since ancient times as ``Hase Kannon,'' but its official name is ``Kaikozan Jishoin Hasedera Temple.'' It is said to have been founded in the 8th year of Tenpyo (736) during the Nara period, and is one of the oldest temples in Kamakura that was designated as an imperial shrine during the reign of Emperor Shomu. The principal image is a statue of Eleven-faced Kanzeon Bodhisattva. It is one of the largest wooden carved Buddha statues in Japan (height 9.18m), and is counted as the fourth of the 33 Kannon sacred sites in Bando, and its lanterns have been passed down to the present day as a symbol of the Kannon sacred sites that represent Togoku.
