Overview

Nightlife in Cologne has to be explored but if you want to see your food scene at the "most Cologne", your lunchtime tour will show you our, best-kept secret. No, not some restaurant, a neighborhood. Your lunchtime food tour takes you through Agnesviertel, the city's beloved "neighborhood of love," where market culture, Roman roots, and immigrant communities created one of Europe's most quietly extraordinary food scenes. From Reibekuchen at a local market to Karneval staples at a century-old butcher, Italian focaccia to Turkish Lahmacun, each stop tells the story of a city that built its identity one welcoming, working-class bite at a time. We finish where the neighborhood's heart beats loudest, in front of the beautiful Agneskirche, with dessert, kiosk culture, and the full story of what makes Cologne so special. You'll leave the tour full, having met local owners, knowing hidden spots and recommendations, and understanding Cologne's food and culture more than many residents do!

What's included

  • Recommendations - after eating our way through Cologne, we'll provide you with our favorites!

  • Make sure to come hungry to our tour. With at least SIX stops, you'll need room to sample all the dishes we want to try.
  • Gratuties for your guide - our guides love their jobs, if you liked it too, tips help them greatly!

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Stop 1

    25 min

After meeting in front of one of Germany's most popular bars, we'll begin to explore Cologne's foodie scene in a staple of Agnesviertel, one of the city's most beautiful neighborhoods at the Sudermanplatz Weekly Market. Through a mix of stalls, get ready to explore and sample a variety of cuisines and flavours centered in Cologne's culture and fundamental to our taste-identity. With a hand from stall owners, we'll get our food journey started.

  2. 2

    Stop 2

    20 min

Cologne's culture isn't just German in origin. We've got some deep roots that start in one of the most beloved food countries in the world: we're talking about Italy. Find out why Cologne, not Munich, is the most Northern Italian city and the Roman roots that still help define the city's lifestyle while tasting some of the food that rivals what you'd taste in Italy.

  3. 3

    Stop 3

    5 min

A quick journey into one of the most famous scents in human history, let's get to know more about the perfume that gives men's perfume its name, Eau de Cologne.

  4. 4

    Stop 4

    15 min

What makes Cologne's German food scene so special is its simplicity. No better place to test this than a traditional Metzgerei, a local butchery. We'll sample some of the best (and controversial) Karneval staples while getting into why we still treasure our post-war attitude and what it's meant in creating Cologne's culinary culture.

  5. 5

    Stop 5

    5 min

A tour of Cologne's food scene wouldn't be complete without a stop at a brewery. From outside of Brauhaus Stüsser, we'll learn about Kölsch and the beer traditions that are so ingrained in every Cologne resident's DNA.

  6. 6

    Stop 6

    15 min

If you know Cologne, you'll associate a few cultures beyond German with the city. Mexican food isn't necessarily on that list. We'll show you why all cultures are welcomed to this incredibly diverse city with a tasting led by the shop-owners.

  7. 7

    Stop 7

    20 min

A food tour of Cologne wouldn't be complete without a stop fo one of the most important cultural staples of the city: Turkish Food. We've got you covered at RONI'S, one of our newer and favorite Döner shops. Learn the background of the German Döner and the Turkish culture that created this esssential part of our nightlife, lunchtime cuisine, and more. Sample some of the Turkish food we love so much here to get a better understanding of the flavours and tastes of the German version of this vast cuisine.

  8. 8

    Stop 8

    Pass by

On one of the most beautiful streets in Germany, get to know about the growth of the city into the surrounding neighborhoods and how it helped the city emerge into the diversity it embraces today.

  9. 9

    Neusserplatz- Cologne

    15 min

In the center of Agnesviertel, we'll end our tour in front of the church that gives the quarter its name and a piece of its steady heartbeat. The other piece of that heartbeat is where we'll finish our tour with dessert. At one of the most famous Büdchen in Cologne, we'll wrap up what we've learned and give you the recommendations we've collected over years of guiding so you can explore the city further! From there, explore Agnesviertel further, catch a tram or bus from a nearby station, or walk your way into the city within 20 mins or less.

Meeting and pickup

You'll find your guide in front of one of Cologne's most famous bars, Suderman. Recognize them wearing clothing from the company Freewalk Cologne, a nametag and a smile.

End point

We'll end our tour a five minute walk from where the tour begins in one of Cologne's most beautiful squares. From here, you can easily catch public transport within a few minute walk or explore the neighborhood of Agnesviertel further.
