Overview

Four canyons in one day, on a route we built ourselves after years of walking these mountains. Most tours show you one canyon. We link four. We start in the small Colored Canyon (Salama), then the White Canyon, then the Closed Canyon: the narrowest of them, with no exit and pools after rain. Hamata Canyon is the quiet one, named after a single fig tree that waters itself from the rock. Then Mushroom Rock and Ain Khudra Oasis, where a Bedouin family serves tea in the shade of the palms. You travel by 4x4 from Dahab in a small private group with a local Bedouin guide. Expect about 8 km on foot with short scrambles and tight squeezes: fun, not extreme, but you need to be able to climb a little and duck through narrow rock. Hamata and the Closed Canyon are the tightest squeezes and need good fitness; they are optional, and you can wait in the car instead. Lunch is a Bedouin meal at Ain Khudra Oasis, included in the price.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    South Sinai

    5 hours

We meet at 7:45 at the meeting point in Asala and leave at 8:00 sharp; you'll get the details in a WhatsApp group once you book. First stop is Hamata Canyon: a short hike to its single fig tree and the story behind it. Then the small Colored Canyon (Salama), one of the most colourful corners of Sinai, and the White Canyon, where we start walking towards Ain Khudra Oasis. We rest at the oasis with Bedouin tea in the shade and a Bedouin lunch, then finish with the Closed Canyon and Mushroom Rock before driving back to Dahab.

  2. 2

    Coloured Canyon

    4 hours

The canyon section of the day: the small Colored Canyon (Salama), the White Canyon, the Closed Canyon and Hamata Canyon, each one different. Salama is all colour, White Canyon is bright and wide, the Closed Canyon is the narrowest of them all with no way out but back, and Hamata hides a single fig tree that waters itself from the rock. Short scrambles and a few tight squeezes, nothing technical.

  3. 3

    Ain Khudra

    2 hours

Ain Khudra Oasis: palm trees and a spring in the middle of the desert. We rest in the shade with Bedouin tea, walk around the gardens and take our time before the last canyon. Lunch is a Bedouin meal here, included.
