São Miguel East Escape: Nordeste Views and Serra da Tronqueira

Discover Nordeste, located on the easternmost part of the island, widely regarded as the most beautiful region of São Miguel and one of the most flower-rich areas in Europe. Begin your experience at the iconic Salto do Cavalo viewpoint, offering breathtaking panoramic views over Povoação, the island’s oldest settlement, and its dramatic coastline. Travel onwards through the Serra da Tronqueira, a protected natural reserve rich in dense vegetation and home to unique wildlife, including the rare Azores bullfinch (Pyrrhula murina). Weather permitting, enjoy views of Pico da Vara, the highest peak on the island. Arrive in the tranquil village of Nordeste, where you will have free time to wander and discover this charming area, known for its beautiful gardens and traditional character. The tour continues with scenic stops along the east and south coasts, including a visit to Povoação, before returning with unforgettable views along the way.

   Miradouro do Salto do Cavalo

   1 hour

   Stop at the viewpoint of Salto do Cavalo’s peak. Take in astonishing and wide views over Povoação, the first place to be settled on the island, as well as the coast that extends beyond Povoação.

   1.5 hours

   Next, go down to the town of Nordeste and have free time for lunch (not included).

   Serra da Tronqueira

   1.5 hours

   Pass by the beautiful Serra da Tronqueira, where you will enter a big lush forest, home to the Priolo bird (Pyrrhula murina). On a beautiful day, it is possible to see Pico da Vara, the highest point of São Miguel island, rising up 1,103m above sea level.

   1 hour

   Stop at wonderful viewpoints along the East and South coasts and also at Povoação.
