Itinerary

  1. 1

    Blade Gate

    10 min

Begin your exploration of Rothenburg ob der Tauber with a walk along its remarkable medieval city walls. The approximately four-kilometre circuit, known as the Rothenburger Turmweg or Tower Trail, provides an excellent introduction to the city's history, fortifications and distinctive skyline. Along the way, you will encounter historic towers, gates and covered sections of the ramparts, while learning how Rothenburg's medieval character survived despite the severe destruction suffered during the Second World War.

  2. 2

    Stop 2

    10 min

Continue to the eastern part of the old town to discover the Rödertor and the imposing Röderturm, a 14th-century tower that formed an important part of Rothenburg's defensive system. The tower was badly damaged and burned during the Allied air raid of March 1945, but reconstruction began soon afterwards. Today, the tower houses an exhibition documenting the city's destruction and reconstruction and offers impressive views across the historic town.

  3. 3

    Gerlachschmiede

    10 min

From the Rödertor, follow Röderschütt to the beautifully reconstructed Gerlachschmiede, one of Rothenburg's most distinctive historic buildings. Originally a blacksmith's workshop, the building was completely destroyed in the 1945 air raid and lovingly reconstructed in the post-war period. Its richly decorated gable, colourful details and distinctive coat of arms—featuring a crowned serpent associated with the blacksmith Georg Gerlach—make it a particularly picturesque stop along the city wall.

  4. 4

    Das Plonlein

    10 min

Continue towards Rothenburg's celebrated Plönlein, one of the city's most recognisable landmarks and its most famous photographic viewpoint. The name Plönlein is traditionally translated as “little square by the fountain”. Rather than referring solely to the famous half-timbered house, the Plönlein encompasses the entire picturesque ensemble of the house, fountain and the two medieval towers framing the scene—the Siebersturm and the tower of the Kobolzeller Gate, dating from 1360.

  5. 5

    Markusturm and Buttelhaus

    10 min

As you continue through the historic streets, pass the Romantik Hotel Markusturm, a beautifully preserved building with a history stretching back centuries. The property began as a customs house in 1264 and became a brewery and inn in 1488 before being established as a Romantik Hotel in 1972. Today, the building combines historic timber framing and antiques with modern comforts, reflecting Rothenburg's long-standing tradition of preserving its architectural heritage.

  6. 6

    Stop 6

    10 min

Continue along the Tower Trail to the White Tower and the neighbouring Jewish Dance House, or Judentanzhaus. This area provides an opportunity to explore an important chapter in Rothenburg's Jewish history. The nearby Judengasse, whose name has been recorded since 1371, is notable for its late-medieval half-timbered buildings and is regarded by the city as the only surviving late-medieval Jewish street of its kind in Europe. The Jewish Dance House and associated memorial elements recall the history of the medieval Jewish community of Rothenburg.

  7. 7

    Rothenburg ob der Tauber

    10 min

As you explore the northeastern quarter of the old town, discover how Rothenburg's historic appearance was painstakingly restored after the devastating air raid of 31 March 1945. Around 40% of the old town was destroyed, prompting extensive debate about how the damaged buildings should be rebuilt. The resulting approach, known as the “Rothenburger Weg”, placed particular emphasis on preserving the historic character and overall appearance of the city rather than simply reconstructing individual buildings.

  8. 8

    Rothenburg Town Hall

    10 min

Continue to the Marktplatz to admire Rothenburg's magnificent Town Hall, one of the city's architectural highlights. Its Renaissance façade dominates the market square, while the building incorporates earlier medieval elements and later additions. The Town Hall has played a central role in Rothenburg's civic life for centuries, and its tower provides a spectacular panoramic viewpoint over the rooftops of the old town and the surrounding countryside. Visitors who climb the tower reach the viewing platform via 220 steps.

  9. 9

    Franziskanerkirche

    10 min

Conclude your tour at the Franciscan Church on Herrngasse, one of Rothenburg's oldest surviving churches and an important reminder of the city's medieval religious heritage. The church of the Franciscan mendicant order was consecrated in 1309 and retains an original wooden rood screen, medieval tomb monuments and other historic features. The church is particularly notable for its connection with the Franciscan tradition and its intimate, atmospheric interior, providing a peaceful conclusion to your exploration of Rothenburg's medieval old town.
