Itinerary

Loch Ness Region
20 min
Did you know that the legendary Loch Ness Monster was first recorded in 565 AD, when Irish missionary St Columba was said to have encountered a mysterious creature in the River Ness? Today, the legend lives on somewhere within the 23-mile stretch of Loch Ness — one of Scotland’s most famous and mysterious bodies of water. Take a moment to gaze across the deep, dark waters, enjoy the fresh Highland air and keep your eyes peeled for a tell-tale ripple, hump or shadow beneath the surface. Will you be the one to finally capture proof of Nessie? There’s only one way to find out. Keep watching the loch!

Loch Cluanie
Pass by
We’ll travel through the beautiful Glen Cluanie, alongside the tranquil waters of Loch Cluanie, surrounded by rugged mountains and sweeping Highland scenery. While this isn’t usually a scheduled stop, we’re happy to pause here if you’d like to stretch your legs, take photographs or simply enjoy the peaceful Highland landscape. The changing light across the loch and dramatic mountain backdrop make it a lovely spot to take in the scenery. The name Cluanie comes from the Gaelic Cluainidh, meaning a meadow or pasture, a fitting name for this quiet glen. The area is also steeped in Highland history, with old tracks and settlements hinting at the people who once travelled and lived among these mountains. If you see a view that catches your eye along the way, just let us know — we’re happy to make the most of the journey with you.

You might expect a battle fought here to involve rival Highland clans — but this story takes a rather unexpected turn. In 1719, these peaceful hills became the unlikely battleground between British Redcoats and Spanish soldiers who had sailed to Scotland to support the Jacobite Rising. On 10 June 1719, around 300 Spanish troops joined forces with Jacobite Highlanders and took up positions in the hills above Glenshiel. They were met by government forces under General Joseph Wightman, supported by several Highland clans who remained loyal to the Hanoverian government. The fighting lasted for several hours across this rugged landscape, with the Jacobite and Spanish forces eventually retreating. The Spanish troops later surrendered, bringing the rising to an end. Today, the glen looks remarkably peaceful. But standing here, it’s hard to imagine that these hills once echoed with musket fire as Scottish Jacobites, Spanish soldiers and British Redcoats fought for control of the glen.

Eilean Donan Castle
1 hour
Standing at the meeting point of three sea lochs, on a small tidal island surrounded by mountains and water, is one of Scotland’s most recognisable landmarks — Eilean Donan Castle. It’s easy to see why it’s Scotland’s most photographed castle. Its dramatic setting is captivating from the outside, but step inside and you’ll find equally fascinating historic rooms, winding passages and atmospheric interiors. The castle has also been a favourite with filmmakers and photographers, appearing in films, television, advertisements, fashion shoots and music videos around the world. You’re welcome to admire the castle and its spectacular setting from the outside at no cost. If you’d like to explore the castle interiors, admission tickets can be purchased on-site. Either way, it’s a memorable stop and one of the most iconic views in the Highlands.

Skye Bridge
Pass by
Rising impressively above the water, this remarkable bridge was designed with enough clearance to allow even the tallest ships to pass safely beneath it. That impressive height creates one of its most striking features — from certain viewpoints, the road appears to climb dramatically towards the centre before descending again on the other side. The steep-looking ascent is even more impressive when you see the scale of the bridge against the surrounding landscape. It’s a brilliant example of engineering designed not only to connect the two shores, but also to accommodate the busy waters below.

Sligachan
50 min
According to a charming local legend, the waters beneath Sligachan Bridge hold a special secret. It is said that if you immerse your face in the cold water for seven seconds and allow it to air-dry completely, you’ll be blessed with everlasting beauty. Whether you believe the legend or not, it makes for a fun Highland tradition — although the water comes straight from the Cuillin mountains, so prepare yourself for quite a shock! Sligachan is one of the most spectacular spots on the Isle of Skye, surrounded by the rugged peaks of the Black Cuillin. The area has long been a base for hikers and mountaineers exploring the Cuillin, with the Sligachan Hotel and its surroundings a popular starting point for mountain adventures. The old stone bridge dates from the 19th century and crosses the River Sligachan. It’s a place where history, folklore, hiking and spectacular scenery come together — and perhaps the perfect place to test that beauty legend!
- 7
Portree
1.7 hours
We’ll arrive in the charming harbour town of Portree, the colourful capital of the Isle of Skye, where we’ll stop for lunch and a chance to explore. The town’s streets are lined with quirky independent shops, cosy cafés and local businesses, making it a lovely place to wander and soak up the island atmosphere. Down by the harbour, a picturesque row of pastel-coloured houses curves around the waterfront and has become one of Portree’s most recognisable views — and a favourite photo spot for visitors and locals alike. Take some time to enjoy lunch, browse the shops, stroll along the harbour and perhaps capture that postcard-perfect view before we continue our journey through Skye.

The Old Man of Storr
3 hours
Our Feature Attraction Option 1 (recommended) will take you into the spectacular landscapes of the north-east of the Isle of Skye, with the choice of a more challenging hike or a comfortable walk at your own pace. For avid hikers, the Old Man of Storr is a truly rewarding experience. Local legend tells of a giant who once lived along the Trotternish Ridge, with the towering rock formation said to be his thumb. The climb takes you right into the heart of this incredible landscape, with magnificent views unfolding as you make your way up. Reaching the viewpoint and standing beneath the iconic Old Man is an achievement you’ll remember for a lifetime. If you’d rather take things at a gentler pace, we can enjoy the scenery from lower viewpoints without taking on the full hike. Time permitting, we can also make stops at Kilt Rock, Mealt Falls, Lealt Falls, Kyleakin and Rigg Viewpoint along our North-East route.
- 9
Quiraing
1.5 hours
For a more relaxed adventure, we can head to the Quiraing — one of the most extraordinary landscapes on the Isle of Skye. Formed by an enormous landslip, its dramatic cliffs, unusual rock formations and sweeping views create a landscape that feels almost otherworldly. You don’t need to tackle the full hike to experience the magic of the Quiraing. We’ll take you to some of our favourite viewpoints and, because we know the area well, we can show you the most epic spots for those unforgettable photos — including a few places you might otherwise miss. Take your time, soak in the scenery and capture a little piece of Skye to take home with you. On a clear day, the views stretch across the Trotternish Peninsula, with the sea and distant islands creating an incredible backdrop for your photos. It’s the perfect choice for those who want to experience the Quiraing without turning the day into a strenuous hike.

Stop 10
2 hours
Our Feature Attraction Option 2 takes you through the south-west of the Isle of Skye, where dramatic landscapes, ancient history and Highland legends meet. A 2.4 km walk across gravel, peat, grass and heather leads to the magical Fairy Pools, with spectacular views of the Cuillin Mountains. Their crystal-clear waters and cascading waterfalls have inspired legends, with some believing the pools are gateways to the realm of the fairies. It’s an enchanting place to explore and photograph. We’ll also visit Dunvegan Castle, ancestral home of Clan MacLeod and Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited castle. Should you wish to explore inside, admission can be purchased on-site. Otherwise, enjoy the castle grounds. To complete the experience, we’ll visit Talisker Distillery, the oldest working whisky distillery on Skye. Set against a spectacular coastal backdrop, it’s a wonderful way to discover Scotland’s whisky tradition and add an authentic taste of Scotland to your day.
