Itinerary

  1. 1

    Sabukaze Pottery Museum

    15 min

Explore the origins of pottery in the region through Sue ware, an ancient type of high-fired stoneware introduced to Japan in the Kofun period. Learn how early kiln technology and ceramic production in this area laid the foundation for the later development of Bizen ware.

  2. 2

    Inbe Minami Ogamaato

    15 min

Visit the historic Minami Ohgama kiln ruins and learn about the role of large communal kilns in Bizen pottery history. The site is also one of the most photogenic spots in Imbe, with dramatic piles of old pottery fragments and a unique atmosphere.

  3. 3

    Stop 3

    1.5 hours

Step inside Banzan Kiln and see Bizen pottery taking shape from the very beginning. Your host is an instructor at the Bizen Pottery Center, known for his warm and patient approach. Beginners are very welcome. See the raw local clay, learn how it is prepared and shaped, and discover how each piece is carefully placed in the kiln to create different surface effects. You can watch the process up close, ask questions freely, and gain a much deeper understanding of how Bizen ware is actually made. If Banzan Kiln is unavailable, a comparable local Bizen pottery studio or kiln may be substituted.

  4. 4

    Tempo Kiln

    10 min

Visit the Tenpo Kiln, a smaller historic kiln built after Bizen’s era of large communal kilns. Learn how pottery production changed in the late Edo period as kilns became smaller and focused more on vessels such as jars, tea ware, and flower vases.

  5. 5

    Amazu Shrine

    15 min

Walk through the historic streets of Imbe, where pottery workshops, climbing kilns, galleries, and traditional houses are woven into the townscape. Enjoy discovering small details, local atmosphere, and photogenic scenes along the way.
