National Gallery of Art Specialized Tour with Hands On Activity

Art Scene docents bring specialized expertise across poetry, history, art-making, and cultural studies. Each tour includes a hands-on activity tied to the docent's focus area, helping you engage directly with concepts and leave with a deeper understanding of the collection. Rather than standard overviews, you'll explore art through unique lenses based on your guide's background and interests.

Each tour is customized based on your docent's specialty-whether poetry, contemporary African American art, Chinese calligraphy, acting or cultural history. Your guide selects artworks that connect to their expertise and your interests, meaning no two tours are identical. You'll explore pieces through your docent's unique lens, participate in a hands-on activity related to the theme, and leave with perspectives you won't find on standard museum tours. Because each docent curates their own route through the collection, you can book multiple tours and discover entirely different aspects of the National Gallery each time.
