Modernism and Bauhaus - Private architecture tour of Berlin

Join an architecture tour led by a practicing architect. Using a car will allow us to see as much as possible. Of course the tour can be adapted to special interests.

1. 1

   Bauhaus-Archiv Museum fur Gestaltung

   15 min

Learn about the history of the Bauhaus, from its founding in Weimar to its dissolution during the Nazi era. At present, the archives are still closed so we'll view from the outside only

2. 2

   Hufeisensiedlung

   30 min

We'll see at least one of the Modernist Estates of Berlin (there are five alltogether, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site).

3. 3

   Berliner Philharmonie

   15 min

Explore the work of Hans Scharoun, a prominent Bauhaus Architect who, after fleeing into exile during the Nazi regime, returned to Berlin in the 60s to help rebuild the city.

4. 4

   Neue Nationalgalerie

   15 min

Discover the last work of Mies van der Rohe in Berlin, the Neue Nationalgalerie. It's his only work in Germany carried out after the war. We can end the tour here in case you want to visit inside.

5. 5

   Hansaviertel

   30 min

West-Berlin's response to East-Berlin's Karl-Marx-Allee, showing off modern capitalist architecture. We'll look at different houses from different architects, all done in the 1950s.
