Overview

Enjoy a gentle coastal walk on Mallorca from the picturesque village of Sant Elm to the peaceful sanctuary of La Trapa Monastery. This journey takes you through the rugged beauty of the island's landscape. The trail to La Trapa Monastery starts from Sant Elm, usually near the seafront or the edge of the village. Look for signs or ask locals for directions to the trailhead. The trail initially winds through the outskirts of Sant Elm, offering glimpses of the Mediterranean Sea along the way. Throughout the hike, you'll be treated to breathtaking views of the coastline, with the sparkling Mediterranean stretching out before you. Take plenty of breaks to soak in the scenery and capture some photos to remember the experience. After a few hours of hiking, you'll finally reach La Trapa Monastery, a remote and peaceful sanctuary nestled in the hills. This monastery, founded in the 19th century, offers a fascinating glimpse into Mallorca's religious history.

Itinerary

Embark on a guided hike from Sant Elm to the La Trapa Monastery. Enjoy the natural beauty of Mallorca and the stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea, and explore the charming village of Sant Elm. This walk is circular and has a moderately low ascending difficulty. The highlight of the route is the spectacular views of Sa Dragonera (“The Dragon Island”), which lies just offshore on the southwest part of Mallorca, the 400- year-old “Torre de Cala ses Bassets” Watchtower, and, of course, the ruins of Sa Trapa Monastery, originally a Trappist Monastery which since the 1800s was abandoned and fell into deterioration, ruin and obliviation. In 1980, this place was acquired by the Balearic Nature Protection Organization, which started to rebuild some monuments. La Tapa has been declared a “Special protection area for birds” and a “Wildlife refuge.” Among its values are 14 varieties of Orchids and 16 endemic species of plants and birds, such as the Balearic Warbler, Osprey, Black Vulture, and Eleonor ́s Falcon. The area around La Trapa is being slowly rebuilt, and the idea is to become a hikers’ refuge one day. For many, it also is the first or the last stage along the GR-221.
