Overview

Kompong Khleang is the largest and least-visited floating village on the Tonle Sap Lake, a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and your guide grew up there. Join a small group (max 10) in an air-conditioned minivan for a 4-hour trip from Siem Reap. Stop on the way for fresh sticky rice from a roadside stand, then board a wooden boat through a stilted village of 10,000 people, where houses rise eight metres above the dry-season ground. Visit the village pagoda and its giant Buddha, pass the floating school, and continue out onto the open lake. The sunset departure ends with sunset on the water. Hotel pickup, English-speaking guide, boat fees, water and snacks included.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Stop 1

    15 min

A quick roadside stop in Damdek to try freshly made Khmer sticky rice, cooked in bamboo over charcoal, before continuing to the lake.

  2. 2

    Kompong Khleang

    2 hours

Experience Kompong Khleang, the largest and most authentic floating village in Siem Reap, on a carefully crafted private tour. We leave Siem Reap at your convenience, traveling in an air-conditioned vehicle directly to the village. On the way, we make stops to see a famous sticky rice village, a local bakery, and a rural market to learn a bit about "countryside shopping". Upon arrival in the village, we board a boat and travel through the heart of the floating village, passing by stilted and floating homes that have been here for generations. Highlights include Wat Kompong Khleang and the Glimmering Buddha, the tallest Buddha in Siem Reap. After passing through the floating village, we continue onwards to the Tonle Sap. Here you will see two other floating villages - a Cambodian and an ethnic Vietnamese community. Your guide will talk about its unique ecosystem and how it is the lifeblood of the nation. This tour lasts approximately 5 hours, depending on your needs.

  3. 3

    Tonle Sap Lake

    45 min

We will travel through the village and out to the Tonle Sap Lake. Here is where you will see two other floating communities and learn about the importance of the lake for the nation. Time spent here depends on you - if you decide to stay for sunset it can be upwards of 45 minutes.
