Overview

This tour is designed to combine cultural depth with distinctive local experiences in a single day from Ichinoseki. Alongside the UNESCO-listed temples of Hiraizumi, you can choose between two contrasting gorge experiences—Genbikei or Geibikei—each offering a different perspective on nature. At Genbikei Gorge, beyond the striking rock formations, you can witness the unique “kakko dango” experience, where orders and freshly made Japanese rice dumplings are delivered across the gorge via a rope system. This playful tradition adds a memorable cultural element to the visit. Alternatively, Geibikei Gorge offers a slower, immersive journey by traditional boat, allowing you to fully appreciate the surrounding cliffs and atmosphere. With flexible route options and travel by private car, this tour provides a comfortable and personalized way to explore both the historical and local character of the Ichinoseki area.

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Stop 1

    40 min

Genbikei Gorge is a dramatic natural formation shaped by volcanic activity and erosion, featuring rugged rock formations and a flowing river below. Walking along the viewpoints, you can observe the powerful forces of nature that carved this landscape over time. The area is also known for a unique local specialty called “kakko dango,” often referred to as “flying dumplings.” Orders are sent across the gorge using a rope system, with freshly made dumplings delivered from the opposite side—creating a playful and memorable experience for both the eyes and the palate. Please note that kakko dango is closed on Tuesdays.

  2. 2

    Motsuji Temple

    1 hour

Motsuji offers a contrasting atmosphere, known for its Pure Land garden that recreates the Buddhist vision of paradise through landscape design. Centered around a large pond, the garden invites you to walk along its paths while appreciating carefully arranged stones, open views, and seasonal greenery. Unlike enclosed temple structures, this space emphasizes harmony between architecture and nature, providing a calm and immersive cultural experience.

  3. 3

    Chuson-ji Temple

    2 hours

Founded in the 12th century, Chusonji is the spiritual heart of Hiraizumi, once envisioned as an ideal Buddhist land. Walking through the cedar-lined approach, you’ll encounter a series of historic halls culminating in the famous Konjikido Hall, covered entirely in gold leaf. This site reflects the region’s former prosperity and refined culture, offering a deep insight into the power and aesthetics of the Fujiwara clan.

  4. 4

    Geibikei

    Pass by

Geibikei Gorge offers a different kind of experience, where you travel by traditional flat-bottom boat guided along a calm river between towering cliffs. The slow pace allows you to fully appreciate the vertical rock formations and quiet surroundings. The boatman’s local storytelling and songs create a cultural atmosphere unique to this region, making the journey both scenic and immersive. This option extends the tour duration but provides a more experiential encounter with nature. With this option, you will visit Geibikei Gorge instead of Genbikei Gorge.
