Itinerary

Create a Japanese hanging scroll that tells your story in this private calligraphy workshop in Hiroshima. The workshop takes place in a calm Japanese-style studio, about a 15-minute walk from Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park. With no other guests, you can create at your own pace. First, learn about Japanese calligraphy, hanging scrolls, and Yojijukugo—meaningful phrases written with four Kanji characters. Then, use a traditional Kumano brush made in Hiroshima to practise how to hold it and make basic strokes. After practising, choose what to write. Select a Yojijukugo that reflects your wishes, values, or a memory from your trip. For example, Ichigo Ichie (一期一会) means treasuring each meeting. You can also choose a word written with one or two Kanji characters. Your instructor will explain the meanings and help you find a word that feels right for you. Write your final piece and mount it onto a Japanese hanging scroll called a Kakejiku. Choose from two scroll colours to complete your work. Take home your one-of-a-kind hanging scroll. The finished scroll is approximately 80 cm long and comes in a protective tube, so you can carry it during your travels.
