Overview
Experience a unique hike on the legendary Appian Way, known as "The Queen of Roads." This 5-hour journey, led by an expert guide, offers a blend of history and nature as you trek the same path once traveled by ancient Romans. Starting from S. Maria delle Mole, easily accessible from Termini Station, you'll hike approximately 17 kilometers to Circus Maximus, passing through stunning Roman countryside, ancient villas, and historical landmarks. This challenging hike requires good fitness and is ideal for those who appreciate nature, history, and an authentic Roman experience. The hike is mostly on the original Appian Way, with 90% dedicated to hiking and 10% to exploring points of interest. Meet 15 minutes before departure. Please bring hiking boots, 1.5 liters of water, and suitable outdoor attire. Optional items include hiking poles and snacks. Note: Transport, food, and entrance fees are not included. Appian Way (Via Appia Antica)
5 hours
Our certified hiking guide will walk with you along the entire stretch of the Appian Way that is accessible.
Meeting and pickup
There is a very small train station with just one platform, called S. Maria Delle Mole. We meet directly on this platform, which is right next to the main road. The exact meeting location is right under the blue sign facing the street, with white letters, saying "S. Maria delle Mole".
From the pickup point, we will walk to the regional train that will bring us to the trail head at S. Maria delle Mole (about 20 minutes by train). Typically the train departs at 7am, so please be at the pickup point no later than 6.30am. You should already have purchased a train ticket at this stage. We will always get in touch no later than 24 hours before the hike, so make sure that your contact details are correct.
End point
The tour ends at Circo Massimo, right next to the subway station (Line B). There are also tram lines and busses.
