Go North Tour - Madeira Island Excursion

You will get to know the North and East parts of Madeira. On this tour you will find the most remote places of the Island. The beautiful landscapes will surprise you. If you choose to visit the Volcanic Caves you will learn a lot about the formation of this beautiful Island. The Caves were formed 890 thousand years ago, these are among the first caves of volcanic origin to be opened to the public in Portugal.

   Optional visit to the Volcanic Caves and Volcanism Centre. The caves were first reported in 1885 by locals, and opened to the public on October 1st, 1996. They were among the first volcanic caves to be opened to the public in Portugal and may be visited by following an underground route running for over 1,000 m. The height of the caves varies between 5 and 6 metres. At the end of the tour, visitors may access the Volcano Centre, a pavilion offering a range of educational and entertaining audiovisual displays that recreate the geological evolution of the caves, the eruption of a volcano and even a simulation of the birth of the Madeira Islands.

   Viewpoint over the village Arco de São Jorge and lunch break.

   Picturesque village, easily recognized for its imponent rock formation Penha D'Aguia. Possibility to visit the historic rum factory - Northern Milling Company - the only one in Europe with steam still in operation.

   Pico do Facho viewpoint

   15 min

   The Pico do Facho Viewpoint offers a wide view over the Machico valley, reaching as far as the island’s central peaks and Ponta de São Lourenço.

   Pleasant village with a promenade by the sea which is a nice place for a stroll. You can also visit the São Salvador Church, a gothic manueline style temple. It is one of the churches, outside of Funchal, with a large architectural interest.
