Overview

Discover ancient Argos on a guided tour from Nafplio. Explore the layers of civilizations of a city that inspired many chapters of the greek mythology as well as american movies. The most ancient continuously inhabited city in Europe has been left outside tourism due to the fact that the greek state didn't like to disturb land ownership of the city since there are three major archaeological sites nearby (Nafplio, Mycenae, Epidaurus) and obviously there is no need for a fourth.

What's included

  • Pick up from meeting point and return to Nafplio
  • Entrance ticket to Argos Archaeological Museum

Itinerary

  1. 1

    Stop 1

    45 min

A rather interesting byzantine castle of the 12th century AD dominates the city landscape, but don't be deceived, what lies below is far more interesting. The foundations date from the 13th century BC while there is a reconstructed mycenean gate too.

  2. 2

    Argos

    20 min

Kritirion - Nymfaion - A roman monumental fountain built around 130 AD, during the Roman era under Emperor Hadrian. It served as a public water source and terminal point for an aqueduct supplying the city. It seems to be built with the roman cement.

  3. 3

    Archaeological Site Of Argos

    45 min

A well-preserved greek theatre of the 3rd century BC, carved in the rock. In the roman era the orchestra was rebuilt according to roman standards. It turned into an arena and introduced new spectacles, fights with gladiators and fights with wild animals.

  4. 4

    Argos

    10 min

The modern statue of Hercules in the city square - Hercules was born in Thiva, central Greece, but his generation came from Argos. A modern statue decorates the city square to remind the origin of the greatest hero of greek mythology.

  5. 5

    Archaeological Museum of Argos

    45 min

A newly-renovated museum that depicts pieces of artwork and the most significant findings of the city.
