Founded in the early 9th century by the Buddhist monk Kukai, Tochoji is one of Fukuoka’s most important temples. Visitors can admire its striking five-story pagoda and explore the main hall that houses a massive wooden Buddha statue, one of the largest seated wooden Buddhas in Japan. Kushida Shrine is known as the guardian shrine of Hakata and is deeply tied to the city’s traditions, including the famous Hakata Gion Yamakasa festival. Within its grounds, you can see beautifully decorated festival floats on display year-round, ornate wooden carvings, and a sacred ginkgo tree said to be more than a thousand years old. This shrine offers a glimpse into the spiritual life and enduring traditions of the local people.
