Si arriva al cratere con una passeggiata di 20/25 minuti in salita. Il biglietto d'ingresso al cratere include una guida interna (2 ore). Ercolano fu sepolta sotto metri di cenere e pomice dalla catastrofica eruzione del Vesuvio del 79 d.C. Una guida privata professionale è altamente raccomandata per visitarla al meglio nelle sue strutture più importanti. La guida è disponibile su richiesta, vi aiuterà a saltare le lunghe code anche in biglietteria, e non è inclusa nel prezzo del tour. Su richiesta è anche possibile fare una pausa pranzo in un ristorante tradizionale locale per gustare un menù fisso (tutto incluso) con cibi, bevande, vino e dessert locali.
