The name Topkapı Palace was influenced by the Top Kapısç ı Sahilsarayı (coastal palace), which was built during the reign of Mahmud I and burned down in 1862. The entire palace became known by this name in the nineteenth century.

Ayasofya'nın güneybatısında, Soğukçeşme Sokağı'nda bulunmaktadır. Suyun içinden yükselen pek çok mermer sütun nedeniyle halk arasında Yerebatan Sarayı olarak isimlendirilmektedir. Sarnıcın üzerinde daha önce bir bazilika bulunmasından ötürü, Bazilika Sarnıcı olarak da adlandırılır.
