Overview
Multnomah Falls is the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million stopping by each year to take in the views! Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, this is one of the best places in the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area to study geology exposed by floods. Continuing east we will be crossing the Bridge of the Gods, featured in the Reece Witherspoon's movie, WILD. Lunch will be enjoyed on your own in one of the charming towns along the Columbia River with numerous dining options including breweries. After lunch, the tour will continue along the Columbia River with scenic views around every corner with our final stops enjoying wine tasting at 2 wineries. Itinerary
- 1
Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area
Pass by
The Columbia River gorge is a spectacular river canyon, 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep, that meanders past cliffs, spires, and ridges set against nearby peaks of the PNW’s Cascade Mountain Range. We will drive through this area during the tour.
- 2
Vista House
20 min
Up on Crown Point, the Vista House was designed and built in the early 20th century, the art nouveau styled building stands as one of the first ‘rest stops’ in the country and pays homage to those who traveled on the Oregon Trail and journeyed down the Columbia River. Crown Point promontory was the ideal site for “an observatory from which the view both up and down the Columbia could be viewed in silent communion with the infinite.” Such an observatory would also be a fitting memorial to “the trials and hardships of those who had come into the Oregon country.” And it could “serve as a comfort station for the tourist and the travelers of America’s greatest highway.” From its surrounding vantage point 733 feet above the Columbia River and overlooking the busy I-84, countless sightseers and photographers have enjoyed a step back in time and one of Oregon’s most inspiring views.
- 3
Latourell Falls
20 min
The falls plunge 224 feet over a massive wall of columnar basalt – some of the best formations in the Pacific Northwest – before cascading hastily toward the Columbia River. This waterfall is usually most recognized for the large patch of bright yellow lichen adorning the cliff face to the right of the falls, and this characteristic has led many famous photographers to give this location their treatment.
- 4
Multnomah Falls
1 hour
Travel time from Portland is 35 minutes. Upon arrival at Multnomah Falls you will spend 30-35 minutes to explore the waterfall and gift store in the lodge. Fed by underground streams that originate miles above on Larch Mountain, this ancient 620 foot (189 m) waterfall is divided into two sections; the upper falls plummets an impressive 542 feet into a pool and again drops 69 feet to form a creek that runs into the Columbia River. Multnomah Falls is the second highest year-round waterfall in the United States and the highest in Oregon, and is Oregon’s number one natural attraction, drawing over 2.5 million visitors a year from around the world. At the base of the waterfall sits the Historic Multnomah Falls Lodge, a full-service day lodge complete with restaurant, gift shop, snack and espresso bar and interpretative center.
- 5
Horsetail Falls- Columbia River Gorge
