Itinerary

  1. 1

    Great Northern Mall

    Pass by

The tour starts in front of the mall.

  2. 2

    Stop 2

    Pass by

Once known as the most bombed hotel in Europe, the Europa was hit around 30 times during the Troubles yet kept its doors open. Since opening in 1971 it has hosted presidents and celebrities, including Bill Clinton on his 1995 visit, and is now a symbol of Belfast’s resilience.

  3. 3

    Stop 3

    Pass by

Opposite the Europa stands one of the finest Victorian gin palaces anywhere. Remodelled in 1885, the Crown dazzles with coloured tiles, stained glass, carved wood and gas lamps, and its private snugs still have bell pushes. The National Trust has owned it since 1978.

  4. 4

    Grand Opera House

    Pass by

The tour passes by the opera house.

  5. 5

    Assembly Buildings - Belfast

    Pass by

Topped by a soaring crown spire, the Assembly Buildings on Fisherwick Place opened in 1905 as the headquarters of the Presbyterian Church in Ireland. Its Scottish Gothic style reflects the Ulster-Scots roots of the faith that shaped so much of Belfast’s history and character.

  6. 6

The tour passes by the institution.

  7. 7

    Stop 7

    Pass by

Facing Inst is the statue of Presbyterian preacher Henry Cooke, still nicknamed the ‘Black Man’ after the dark statue it replaced in 1876. Nearby John Bell House honours the Belfast-born physicist whose Bell’s Theorem transformed our understanding of quantum mechanics.

  8. 8

    Linen Hall Library

    Pass by

The tour stops briefly in front of the library.

  9. 9

    The Scottish Mutual Building- Belfast

    Pass by

Built between 1897 and 1902, this grand sandstone office block on Donegall Square West is a tribute to Belfast’s industrial golden age. Look closely at its carved facade for sphinxes, dolphins and figures representing the trades that made the city rich: linen, shipbuilding and ropemaking.
