Overview

As your cruise arrives in Costa Maya, a day of local culture, traditional flavors, and the turquoise waters of Bacalar awaits beyond the port. Spend time with a local Maya family in Chacchoben Village, where traditions are still part of everyday life. Learn about local plants and traditional home remedies still used today, try making a tortilla by hand, discover family recipes and ingredients, and share an authentic home-cooked Maya lunch with your hosts. From Chacchoben, the day continues at Bacalar’s Seven Color Lagoon, whose waterways once served as a haven and passage for Caribbean pirates. Spend nearly two hours swimming, kayaking, floating on a tube, or simply relaxing by the water with a refreshing drink before returning to Costa Maya.

Spend approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes with your hosts, learning about their traditions and daily life. Watch a traditional tortilla-making demonstration and try making your own, while discovering the fresh ingredients, local spices, and family recipes used in Maya cooking. Then sit down for an authentic home-cooked lunch prepared especially for your visit, including traditional tamales and other dishes made with fresh local ingredients. Add a little habanero sauce if you’re feeling adventurous! After lunch, continue approximately 25 minutes to Bacalar Lagoon for the second part of your adventure.
